Town Square thanks each and every one of you for a great
event on Sunday, April 19th. Happily, the weather held out for us, and we
had a terrific time. We hope that you had the chance to connect with
eco-minded people and celebrate the earth! It was Town Square's second annual
Go Green! Greenpoint! And each year, we are increasingly impressed with the
quality and support from our vendors and participants. In fact, we had
over 50 vendors at the event, including community groups, schools, health and
wellness, recycling and alternative fuel vehicles. Go Green! Greenpoint!
is gaining quite a following not only in our immediate communities but also, as
far away as Connecticut, Long Island, New Jersey, and Westchester.
A very special thank you to NYC Councilmember David Yassky
– for helping secure the permits - and Principal Melissa Silberman,
Assistant Principal Joe Castro, Tom Deignan, and the rest of the staff of the
Automotive High School – for hosting Go Green! Greenpoint!
Thanks to US Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, NYS Assemblyman
Joe Lentol, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Councilwoman Diana
Reyna, and Councilman David Yassky for co-sponsoring Go Green! Greenpoint! and
participating in the festivities.
Thanks to all of our volunteers, especially Joel Matalon,
our amazing emcee whose energy lent a special vibe to the whole day! Many
of you came very early in the morning and stayed late to help set up and clean
up. All of your efforts are greatly appreciated! We could not do
any of our events without the assistance of fellow volunteers.
Thanks to our musical groups for playing at our event -
Co-creative Music, the MS 318 Marching Band, Fenix Down, and the folk band led
by MS 318’s principal, no less! They were all terrific! And, of
course let's not forget Joe Lentol's Star Spangled Banner!
Thanks to all the organizations and vendors who came –
and a special shout out to our local community groups (the Brooklyn Public
Library and their Friends, the Greenpoint-Williamsburg CSA, the Greenpoint
YMCA, NAG, Partnership for Parks, Recycle a Bike, and St. Nicks Preservation
Corporation to name a few), schools (the John Oravesc Center and MS 318), state
and city agencies (NYC Parks & Recreation, NYC DEP, NYS Power Authority),
33rd Council District candidates (Steve Levin, Jo Ann Simon, and
Evan Thies), and MetroFuel for donating their bio-diesel generator.
Thanks to the Williamsburg Church for managing the Recycling
Center (which was swamped with eager treasure hunters) and taking all remaining
clothes and shoes to be redistributed in our Greenpoint/Williamsburg
community. Thanks to Hour Children, a LIC charity, for taking rest of the
donated items from bicycles, books, and toys to all sorts of electronic
equipment. Thanks to CitiStorage for offering professional shredding
services for paper documents.
Thanks to the many
individuals and organizations, whose names are not mentioned but were a vital
part of Go Green! Greenpoint! This was truly a community effort and we look
forward to next year’s Earth Day celebration. If anyone has any thoughts,
questions or suggestions, please let us know. We would love to hear from
you.
